Why Regrets Are Not A Universally Bad Thing!
“Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets.” - Arthur Miller, Playwright
Let’s talk about regrets. cringe 😬
“Oh, if only I hadn’t quit that job”
“Maybe my life would have turned out better if I had started my business earlier”
“Ugh, I should have saved money rather than spend it all on things that don’t matter”
It’s only human to feel regretful, but the very mention of the word just stings, doesn’t it?
Look around you... regrets about life, career, business, finances, and family are so run-of-the-mill.
But hey, stop spiralling! Now’s not the time to sulk.
TRUTH BOMB: As much as you’d like to, you just cannot go back in time and undo the past. However, you can leverage this very journey to elevate your life today and for all the tomorrows you have in store.
Today’s dialogue is about what you should be doing about your regrets - and no, no sulking and spiralling down the rabbit hole. That stops today.
Here’s my #1 suggestion:
Tear down that towering pile of regrets.
Build it back up in a way that it benefits you.
Learn from it all and make positive strides in your life.
Confused? Bear with me for a moment, please. Here’s my story.
When I leapt from my past as an addict, transitioned into recovery - I could have whined about my mistakes and struggles forever.
But I made a very conscious decision to take back control of my wonderful life. I embraced it with open arms.
It is certainly amazing to say this now, but it was a long and hard fight with myself until the moment everything changed.
There were so many opportunities for me to break out of that cycle of addiction I was so deeply caught in. I hate to admit it, but I had been through nearly 50 rehabilitation and institution episodes before the final one that changed everything.
That final time, I think the stars and the planets were aligned at that specific moment… almost as if I was in the right place at the right time. That is when I made a different decision for the first time in my life.
I decided not to go back to my old life.
I remember it being really scary, but honestly, I have never looked back since.
I know what you are thinking… “It is so challenging sometimes! How can you ever muster enough grit to counter the pain?”
I know how that feels because I’ve personally experienced these feelings, situations, and complexities. As a case manager, I have also witnessed this often with our men in recovery at Glebe House, a drug and alcohol treatment centre, where I spend my days mentoring high-risk offenders how to live fuller lives. (Oh, how life changes!)
What is strange yet beautiful is that my journey has given me a unique purpose that I could not be happier about.
I have been asked this question countless times, and I have thought about this often too:
What advice would I give to my 16-year-old self?
This is what I truly believe: I think I am exactly where I'm meant to be because of all the trauma and the horrible things I went through. It has made me the man I am today.
So I wouldn't change a single thing.
Here are my final words that I hope will echo in your bright, wonderful, and happy life - don’t let those regrets keep you down, my friend.
You can either carry this burden with you till the end of your life or empower yourself with what your future can be.
The choice is yours.
